“Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future. What could be more important than that?”
Michael Palin
Our Intent
At St John’s we are geographers!
Our geography curriculum is ambitious and empowers our children to become confident global citizens. We want our pupils to aspire to go into the world and make the most of the rich opportunities that present themselves, as well appreciating the challenges of their time.
Our pupils have a strong knowledge of their local area, their town and the country they live in. We encourage our children to be curious and ask questions about the wider world, including places and people and make connections between them.
We believe that our pupils need to be actively involved in making sense of their learning and therefore an enquiry approach has been implemented, encouraging higher-order thinking and allowing our children to explore in a way that is meaningful to them. Within each year group, geography learning is revisited in a progressive manner, to ensure knowledge, skills and concepts are firmly embedded and subject specific vocabulary is used in context.
Our geography curriculum enables our pupils to develop their understanding of the key geographical concepts of location and place, cause and effect and change. In every year group, our pupils learn geographical skills which focus on map and atlas work. Our geographical enquiry incorporates fieldwork and investigations. We want our children to remember their geography fieldtrips, to cherish these memories and embrace the geographic opportunities they are presented with!
By the time they leave us, we want our children to love geography, to have no limits to what their ambitions are and grow up wanting to be cartographers, town planners, conservationists or weather forecasters!
We believe that: “We are guided by God to be the best we can be”.

Boys' Team
The boys had a great time playing in their tournament. They showed lots of resilience and great sportsmanship throughout - Mr Ferguson was very impressed by their teamwork and attitude! The team represented St. John's very well and tried their best throughout. The boys came 11th overall.
Girls' Team
Despite the tough weather conditions, the girls came second in their group to make it in to the top tier. They were up against some tough opposition but showed tremendous grit throughout. All of the girls played amazingly and worked really well as a team. Mr Cook was really proud of the resilience shown by all of the girls and how they continue to improve every time they play. They came 7th overall.

It has been an absolute pleasure to run Engineering Club these past 6 months. The children have been dedicated and learnt so much about engineering and design. This club is now finished for this academic year but it will be back next year to train the next generation of Darlington engineers. Well done kids. You have done St. John's proud and all of your final designs blew me away. Follow the link below to see some highlights of the final event (the light wasn't great in the hall).
And a huge well done to Collins and Angelica for WINNING the best overall train!
